How Statins Work
How do Statins work?
Statins – also known as “reductase inhibitors”, are the most commonly used class of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statins work by inhibiting a certain enzyme (HMGR – HMG-CoA reductase). By blocking this liver enzyme, they stop cholesterol production, lowing the amount of cholesterol that can be pumped into the blood. This allows an improved clearance of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) (LDL) from the bloodstream. LDL is more commonly referred to in the media as “Bad Cholesterol”.
